Our Vision:
The Lakeshore Trout Unlimited chapter will partner with the local division of the Wisconsin DNR in the stewardship of the areas cold water fisheries. The overarching purpose of which is to reestablish self sustaining wild trout populations throughout the area’s cold water streams with improved water quality, flow and habitat for trout. This will be achieved through our strategies of:
- Actively promoting local conservation awareness and educational efforts to increase understanding and participation in watershed stewardship.
- Building organizational membership and engaging youth in conservation efforts.
- Garnering and cultivating the human, financial, legal and natural resources needed to successfully complete our mission
- Creating partnerships with federal, state, local and other non-government conservation organizations which can assist in carrying out its mission.
- Partnering with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (WDNR) to harness their regulatory and permitting guidance and ecosystem expertise.
- Actively undertaking restoration and rehabilitation projects which protect, repair, improve and maintain cold water fisheries in its stewardship area.
- Encouraging the adoption of appropriate regulations and limitations on trout fishing that conserve and enlarge the wild trout fishery and expand the opportunity to fish for native trout.
With an eye on the future, we have developed a 5 year work and project proposal with the WI DNR that can be seen here.
The Lakeshore TU chapter has been working to restore and maintain our home waters since the 1970's. In that time we have completed various projects such as:
- The Onion River Restoration Project - Part 1
- The Onion River Restoration Project - Part 2
- Brushing out and removing invasive species from Nichols Creek
- Tapping an artesisan spring at Nichols Creek State Wildlife Area
- Clearing out nearly a mile stretch of Ben Nutt Creek that was previously un-fishable
